Deputy Returning Officers (DRO-Non Tech) at non-technologically enabled polls work alongside a Poll Clerk at a polling station to determine elector’s eligibility to vote, register new electors and correct elector information, and provide ballots to electors. DROs also count ballots on by-election day and provide the unofficial count numbers.
Responsibilities:
- Sets up the polling station and constructs and seals the ballot box
- Checks voter’s ID provided and issues ballots to eligible electors
- Registers new electors and fills out forms to change registration details of electors as required
- Instructs voters on how to complete their ballot
- Maintains security of the ballot box
- Directs major elector issues to the Supervisory Deputy Returning Officer
- Conducts the ballot count after polls close, and reports results to SDRO
- Packs up polling station and all supplies after close of voting
Specific Skills:
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to resolve issues and communicate solutions
- Able to follow instructions and checklists and complete repetitive tasks on paper forms
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work with the public
- Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Able to work for long stretches of time(up to 13 hours) and maintain focus
